Transportadora Callao opens new mineral concentrates shipping Terminal with $163 million USD investment

  • Project is part of the Concession Agreement signed by Transportadora Callao S.A. and the Peruvian government on January 28, 2011
  • New Terminal will be a permanent solution for mineral concentrate loading operations at the Port of Callao.

Transportadora Callao S.A. inaugurated today its Mineral Concentrates Shipping Terminal at the port of Callao, debuting the country's largest and most modern loading and shipping facility.  The new terminal was developed and funded by a consortium of five privately held companies: Santa Sofía Puertos S.A., Sociedad Minera El Brocal S.A.A., Impala Perú S.A.C, Perubar S.A. and Minera Chinalco Perú S.A.

The $163 million (USD) investment in new infrastructure and state-of-the-art design confirms Transportadora Callao S.A.'s commitment to contributing to the country’s  domestic economic growth as well as safeguarding the environment and local communities.

The terminal is part of a major Concession Agreement signed by Transportadora Callao S.A. and the Peruvian government on January 28, 2011.

"Today we are inaugurating the most innovative terminal facility for loading mineral concentrates in Peru; this milestone positions Peru as a global leader in specialized infrastructure for the modern-day mining industry, a key economic and social driver for this country," said Ricardo Trovarelli Vecchio, Chairman of the Transportadora Callao S.A. Board.

In addition Mr. Trovarelli noted that  when you add up forecasted growth for mineral concentrate exports, as well as the number of major mining projects that are coming online, maintaining the same infrastructure that’s been employed to date is unsustainable.

"In Peru, the crux of mining operations take place close to the mine, but it is at the port of Callao where mineral concentrates are transferred, warehoused and subsequently exported to markets around the world," said Trovarelli.

The biggest and most modern minerals dock

Innovative loading processes will guarantee faster mineral concentrate transportation and ease congestion along the container port access routes, opening a path towards future expansion of the North dock; it will also eliminate 130 thousand annual truck journeys between the warehouses and the port of Callao, helping to improve air quality while safeguarding the environment and public health.  "These modern facilities will ensure the safety of the entire process, from the warehouse to the new loading terminal, because the mineral concentrates will remain isolated from the environment at all times", said Victor Sam Chang, General Manager at Transportadora Callao S.A.

Sam also announced that Transportadora Callao S.A. will be starting commercial operations within the next few days. The terminal will initially be able to load 3.7 million tons in its first year.  In the next 20 years, the mineral concentrate loading capacity is expected to reach 6 million tons annually.  "This new infrastructure will boost efficiency, create savings and drive competitiveness in our country, in addition to providing environmental and social benefits that will further Peru's mining sector", said the executive.

The management of the terminal’s day-to-day operations and maintenance will fall under consortium partner company Santa Sofía Puertos.
